FAMILY LAW: Family law deals with family relations, which includes the following areas: adoption, child custody, children's rights, child support, visitation, spousal support, separation agreements, divorce, estate planning, estates and trusts, wills, probate, pre-nuptial agreements, marriage and other legal issues that arise in families.
WILLS/ESTATES: A will is a document in which the will-maker specifies who is to receive his or her property at death and names an executor of the estate. A will must be signed by the person who made it, dated, and witnessed by two people to be valid. The will must be placed of record (probated) after a person dies to have legal effect. It is recommended to probate a will even if there are no assets or all assets are held jointly with another person.
GUARDIANSHIP: A guardianship is a legal responsibility created when a person is assigned by the court to take care of minor children or incompetent adults. The guardianship can be permanent or temporary in length. There are many grandparents who obtain guardianship over their grandchildren during a time when the parents are unable to care for their children.
DIVORCE: Divorce is a legal termination of a governmentally-sanctioned marriage. Every divorce is different. How the law applies to your case depends on your personal circumstances. Contact us to see how the law applies to your divorce.
COLLABORATIVE LAW: This is a family law process helping couples who have decided to separate or end their marriage. Rather than litigating the details in court, the parties work with their lawyers, and other professionals, in order to achieve an out-of-court settlement that meets the needs of both parties.
LEGAL SEPARATION: Legal separation is a court decree that recognizes a married couple is living apart and regulates the couple’s individual rights.
PARENT COORDINATOR: A parent coordinator is a trained professional who helps parents manage ongoing issues in child custody/visitation cases. The parent coordinator uses guidance and parent education with mediation/arbitration to make recommendations for the court and decisions with the parents.
PATERNITY: The establishment of a father of a child born to an unmarried couple.
